What better debut for a newborn rose than the spectacular setting of one of the world's most celebrated gardens? The "Grandi Giardini d'Italia" a new, crimson tea rose, created by the Barni Rose nursery for Judith Wade, founder of the Grandi Giardini Italiani (Great Italian Gardens) organization and nominated the "Queen of Gardens" by "Vanity Fair", had its official baptism in the Villa d'Este gardens (Tivoli), attended by Ms. Wade and Andrea Bruciati, curator of the three Tivoli jewels, Villa d'Este, Villa Adriana and the newly restored Temple of Hercules the Victor.

The new rose has been planted in a bed created in the area of the Rometta Fountain, which reproduces Rome's most famous monuments in miniature.

Judith Wade founded the Grandi Giardini Italiani just over twenty years ago in order to encourage awareness of the many splendid gardens in Italy, many of which were closed and often sadly neglected.

"At first," she said. "People told me I was wasting my time. Nobody in Italy is interested in gardens, was the general reaction. People come here to see other things, they said!"

However, Judith persisted and proved she was right. Her organization now counts a membership of 137 gardens, dating from the renaissance to modern times and welcomed 8 million visitors last year. The network includes internationally famous gardens, like the Villa D'Este (Lazio), Isola Bella on Lake Como, Villa Taranto and the Royal Venaria Gardens, Turin, Castel Trauttmansdorff in Trentino Alto Adige, the Royal Palace of Caserta (Campania), the Villa San Michele (Capri) and the Vatican Gardens at Castelgandolfo (Roma), as well as a constantly expanding list of lesser known gardens spread over 13 regions of Italy, as well as Switzerland and Malta.  Over the years, Grandi Giardini Italiani has participated in numerous exhibitions, fairs and events, including EXPO 2015, Euro flora, the World Travel Market and the Chelsea Flower Show,  in addition to publishing guide books and hosting the Martini Prize for Garden Designers. A major attraction every Easter is the Grandi Giardini Italiani Botanical Treasure Hunt, which involved 35 gardens all round Italy in the 2018 edition.

Barni Rose is a family business in Pistoia (Tuscany), specialized in creating new hybrids. Founded in 1882, it is now into its fourth generation of rose cultivators.
