Highlight of the second weekend of the annual horse chestnut festival at Vallerana (Lazio) 12-13 October 2019 will be the presentation of a book recounting the extraordinary story of Alessandro Messina, the down syndrome boy who has overcome prejudice and obstacles in his efforts to realise his dream of enrolling in the special Italian Carabinieri police corps. The book: Storie Normali di un ragazzo speciale, vivere in famiglia la disabilita quotidiana (Normal Stories of a special boy: experiencing daily disability within the family), is written by Alessandro's father Maura Messina and will debut in the O. Benedetti Hall in the medieval town centre. Italy's many gastronomic food fairs and festivals often provide the framework for promoting cultural and social initiatives. The Festival programme includes live music, excursions in the secular chestnut woods of Vallerano, flag throwing displays, wine cellar tours and enjoying the roast chestnuts and red wine available from stalls in the main square.
