The hilly Langhe-Roero and Monferrato regions of Piemonte have been added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, giving Italy the grand total of fifty nominations of more than any other country. The region covers some 100 sq kms with twenty-nine historic towns and villages in six areas of the provinces of Alessandria, Asti and Cuneo.

The motive given was the strong and lasting link between the territory and its history of wine production, perfected over many generations. The area, in fact, has some of the world's most prestigious wines, including Barolo, Barbera and Asti Spumante. In addition, the environment has been carefully preserved, along with the many old castles and historic buildings to create a harmonic scenic whole.
