According to a report published earlier this year during the XII edition of International Day of Landscape Study, Italian woodlands have expanded by 600,000 hectares since 2005 and now coveri 10.9 million hectares of the total area of the country.

Italy's forested areas absorb a quantity of carbon dioxide, estimated at 3-5 tons of CO2 per hectare, in the course of each year, (the equivalent of 10-15% of the country's total emissions) according to Professor Scarascia-Mugnozza of the University of Tuscia, commenting on the report. The trees have advanced mainly in mountainous and hilly regions and in areas where traditional farming has been abandoned.

The interest in creating green areas has extended also to urban sites, where revolutionary projects like architect Stefano Boeri's Vertical Wood high rise building in Milan was awarded Best Building 2015 by the Council of Tall buildings and Urban Habitat.
