SALERNO'S MAGICAL GARDEN OF MINERVA

SALERNO'S MAGICAL GARDEN OF MINERVA

One of Italy's most fascinating and little known gardens is situated in a small cobbled side-street near Salerno Cathedral (Campania). The modest arched entrance in a high concealing wall leads into a fascinating botanical paradise that dates back to the Middle Ages, when Salerno was a leader in the science of medicine. The “Garden of the Minerva” (named after the Graeco-Roman goddess of Science and Healing), was a point of reference for students attending the renowned Medical School of Salerno - the oldest medical school in Europe, dating back to the 9th century AD. It had many celebrated teachers during its long history, included women like the 11th century gynaecologist Trotula di Ruggiero, who has left an authorative treatise on childbirth and women's ailments.

The garden was created at the beginning of the 14th century by doctor Matteo Silvatico, who laid it out in the grounds of his family's aristocratic residence, designing it as a practical teaching aid for his medical students and it became the model for of all subsequent European herb gardens aimed specifically at study and healing.

The building is now known as Palazzo Carpasso after subsequent owners. It is still an integral part of the garden which is divided into six levels, connected by stairways and complete with pergola, terraces, fountains and statues, in addition to over 300 species of herbs and plants, set in shady borders and tagged with their botanical names.

Recently restored by Salerno Town Council (the present owners), the garden is open every day for visits and guided tours.
